Join Tammy, artist and mental health therapist, for an unforgettable art retreat in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. This watercolor retreat will not only teach you the skills to paint loose florals, landscapes, and make loose sketches of foods and buildings, but it will also focus on self-care and self-reflection. As we delve into our art techniques, we’ll also explore concepts such as letting go of perfectionism, grief, forgiveness, gratitude, and growth.
Because of her mental health background, Tammy strives to be intentional about creating an environment of introspection. She encourages her students to let go of perfectionism, especially in their art, so they can fully engage in the art experience. Each student will receive a beautiful journal from Tammy, as she will give students a writing prompt to spend a few minutes in self-reflection at the beginning of each class. This activity will help to promote intentionality and growth during the retreat.
As the retreat classes begin, you will start by learning the foundational skills of watercolor painting, which will help you develop confidence as you dive further into your watercolor and sketching skills. Some of those skills include simple color mixing, water control, and conducting a value study. You’ll also learn how to keep vibrancy in your painting and add depth and shadow as well. You’ll then venture into creating everything from watercolor florals and landscapes, sketching flowers and buildings, and painting foods and flowers from references or real life. Tammy will conduct many demonstrations to give you the opportunity to see how she paints a project before you attempt it yourself.
Each class will give an opportunity to ask questions, get personalized feedback, and share your experiences with other like-minded students. The step-by-step nature of Tammy’s teaching style makes this retreat ideal for both beginners and those with more experience who want to refine their skills.
Tammy has always been a creative person, but did not practice consistently until she was introduced to watercolor during the pandemic. When she discovered watercolor, it provided her with a self-care skill to manage her own anxiety. She has also been a masters-level mental health therapist since 2011, which is why she enjoys mixing self-care in with painting to help students let go of perfectionism. She began teaching art online, slowly growing her presence on Instagram, YouTube, Skillshare, and Patreon. This led to creating her own courses, designing her own watercolor brushes, and even leading art retreats in Italy and now Scotland.
